What could this be?

It's looking like his condition is 'too advanced' for anything to help him. We got an 'it might help' from two vets, but they weren't very positive about it at all. He's starting to be in pain again, and his back looks worse everyday, so we're thinking putting him to sleep would just be the nicest thing to do for him.

i am really sorry to hear that. i know how hard it is to lose one of your babies. you and him will be in my thoughts and prayers. :(
 
Crate rest

Crate rest is the most important thing you can do right now. Dodgers list is a great site with tons of information to help you. My 5 year old went down almost 2 years ago and is doing great now. I could not afford the surgery and went the conservative method instead. He has now been up and running like before with the exception of no jumping off things anymore! If you have any questions or need support please contact me. I would be happy to help in any way I can. One big thing is if you don't like the response you get from one vet go find another that knows dachshunds and IVDD (back problems). One specialist from Kansas State told me if I was going to do the surgery then I might as well as put him down and out of misery! I would love to send him a video of Boone running now!
 
Please check out Dodgers list before you make any decisions. On the home page there is an article right in the middle about quality of life.

If you read through some of my past posts on this thread, you'll see that he was on crate rest for about two months. It was the wrong decision, based on a misdiagnosis, and is what got him to the point he's at now.
Crate rest is more for dogs that don't become paralyzed right away, and have a ruptured disc, since in that case it could usually heal on its own. But he would absolutely need surgery to fix the problems he has, and it's too late.

Both vets I've been talking to now know dachshunds and their back problems very well.
 
I'm sorry I did not read through all of the post. I was offering what experience I had because I looked to those that had experience when it happened to us. I wish you the best in all the hard decisions you had and have to make.
 
I've been following your story but didn't feel qualified to offer advice having never been in your situation. I might have an opinion and then react in an opposite way in real life.

I remember from an earlier post that you describe the pup as crying and not eating. So my immediate reaction is to resist any selfish human desires and just think about the dog and do whatever it takes to end his suffering. That could be medical treatments, doggy vicodan for a time (if such a thing exists), or ending his life and discomfort in a peaceful and loving way.

We can tell you are not making a hasty or thoughtless decision.
