On waiting list for dachshund puppy
Hello,
I’m located in USA, near Chicago. I’m adopting a longhair, miniature cream. I’m new to the breed, however have always wanted one. I have been reading, watching videos about the breed traits, potential health issues etc. I’m no stranger to having a special needs dog and the heartbreak and financial burden that implies. I’m just looking for any information/advice and the experience of longtime dachshund parents regarding pet health insurance and success stories in attempting to avoid IVDD. To me, my pets are literally family. Whatever I can do to give my new baby the best chances of a long and healthy life, I’m fully committed.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. ♥️🐶🌭

Welcome to the board! I've had about 14 dachshunds over the years (I've had as many as 6 at a time) and have been thru IVDD issues a few times. I've had 2 that had surgery. One when I had her and one before I adopted him. I've also had 2 that we have used meds and crate rest to resolve their issues. All did fine for years after. It's very stressful to go thru and I'm hoping to not have to do it again. Right now, I have VOM (veterinary orthopedic manipulation) done on my dogs about every 6 weeks and that has seemed to help a lot. I also have stairs and ramps for them to use to get on the couches and beds and I try to discourage jumping but that can be hit and miss. Good luck with your pups. We'd love to hear more about them.

Thank you so much for responding. I hope your pups don’t have any further health issues. I’ve already bought mini stairs and ramps and am going to use a holistic DV.M who already offers therapy and other services that would be beneficial in the case of any spinal issues should they occur. I’m also going to get pet insurance from the get go. Thanks again for your input. :)

I'm on my 3rd and 5th Dachshund, the 4th had IVDD she was a retired female breeder Dachshund I adopted. The black and tan went through severe allergies during spring and summer when she was a puppy, never figured out what caused it and the vet didn't know either. Medication from the vet, stuffing Benadryl down her and over the counter allergy eye drops kept the allergies at bay. This is her third summer now and no problems, I figured she outgrew it. Just one more thing Dachshunds can get.
I use a ramp for mine to get on the bed also. They are fun dogs, you'll enjoy yours when you get it. Get ready for some sleepless nights the first week. Buy a bottle of Resolve Urine Destroyer if you have carpet the dog will be on.

Thank you so much for responding. I really appreciate it. The Dachshunds I’ve met have been such goofy, fun little characters! 🤗

One thing I just thought about. If you get insurance check to make sure that there isn't an exemption for back issues and surgery. It's very expensive and sometimes insurance doesn't pay for it.
