Hey everyone! I'm new here and about to get a dachund puppy from a small local breeder and was curious how she might look when she gets older. She's a dapple with longer hair than the rest of her litter mates. What do you all think? Will she keep her colors and be a long haired dog or will her colors change a lot and her hair possibly be short?

Congratulations, I just hope the "local breeder" is knowledgeable and a well seasoned breeder so you won't overpay for a hound with inherited health issues. Sorry to sound negative, but I only find my dogs from local rescues of the particular breeds. Sometimes getting a hound of 1+ yrs old can be beneficial for weeding out health issues, compared to a puppy.

Thanks! She was affordable and recommended by the best vet in town! I was warned about puppy mills and wanted to avoid that situation plus all the scams involving dogs online.

I was just curious how the genetics work. Does she look like a long haired dachshund and does the dapple change much as an adult?

I have only some experience with short haired Standards. I'd assume the color pattern will remain, but will become slightly richer in color as an adult, and of course fade or even gray when elderly. The length of hair should remain constant since she has it now. If you're able to see both parents it might help solve some of the mystery.

The dad has really short fur and the mom has just a little bit longer fur than the dad. Dad is solid dark chocolate and the mom is a light brown with dappling mostly on the ears.
