Building a kennel - how big

I'm planning to build a kennel for a dachshund. He's a puppy now but will get bigger. How big should the kennel be?

Why even use a kennel? I use fence if I dont want the dog in all our rooms. Let the dog be where you are moste of the time. It will calm the dog.
