Troubles. Need advice.

HI, my name is Aaron.

I have a five year old mini dachshund named Abby (The black one in the pic). She does not jump up and down off of anything, i built ramps for the couch and bed, I live on a single floor apartment, her life has been very low impact from when she was a puppy . Up until about a week ago she seemed fine , About six days ago she stopped being able to use her rear legs. After taking her to the veterinarian he determined that it was most likely a back problem and has been treated with steroids and strict rest. When we got home from the first vet visit. While I was putting her down I noticed a red spot on her belly behind her rear legs. This spot was red with another outer red ring, since then she has only gotten worse and cannot walk on her own because her back a legs do not function the way she wants them to. The veterinarian gave her two strong shots of steroid over the past week and a prescription daily that is also steroids.

She has not responded at all to the steroids or daily medication. She does not yelp for pain or seem like she is in any pain. Her current condition has changed very little and she has got a dry nose. She has thrown up once and pooped on herself once. I have been taking her outside about 3 times a day, morning is usually just urine, about 11AM she does both and again in the evening she just has urine.

The XRay's at the vet showed a perfect spine up to the front shoulder blades. Around the front shoulders on the XRay it looks like the spinal disk's are possibly inflamed but its very hard to tell, i felt like i knew more about the bread than the vet did. I am in a very rural part of North Carolina and there is only 1 Vet clinic within about a 15 mile radius.

My parents have a 8 y/o red coat mini that's jumped off of about everything u can name. Couch's chairs tables steps beds. And has thrown her back about 3 times now. The difference being is that every time she did that she has had extreme pain also associated with the injury. My dog does not seem in any pain, before or after the vet.

I guess my question is if she had a TICK bite or some other insect type of bite could it be causing this?

My parents dog has never had a dry hot nose through its time of having back pain. I Dont know what else to do. Steroids have done nothing. Few other medications have done nothing.

She is my life.. My child. It breaks my heart everyday to see her laying there looking at me like "what is going on, why are you doing this to me".

Bad back? or should i ask for some blood work or something. i don't even know what things can be tested for.

Thank you for your time.

It has only been a week, not even. When Georgia's back went, it took at least 6 weeks of crate rest before I thought maybe there was some improvement. Please go to dodgerslist, it's a website that helps families deal with spinal cord injury.

When you take her out, use a spare leash or scarf as a sling to hold up her back end. Carry out to potty, carry back to crate.

Put some pumpkin in her food. The extra fiber will make it easier for her to move her bowels. You can buy it in a can and put the extra in an ice cube tray and freeze until needed. Cutting back her food a bit will help her to not put on extra weight while on rest.

Have you spoken to the vet about the bull's eye rash?

Do not be discouraged. Many people have gone through the same thing (myself 3 times with 3 different dogs) and have seen a full recovery. Keep a happy mood around her, hum a happy tune, smile. If you are anxious and worried around her, she'll feel that, and it won't help her. Be brave! It can turn around, but it takes TIME.

Again, please go here and sign up if you haven't done so already..

It wouldn't hurt to ask your vet to check for Lyme disease and also for ANAPLASMOSIS, both tick borne diseases. You can google it by typing in Anaplasmosis in dogs VCA Animal Hospitals. Anaplasmosis does not show up on the Lyme test, but some symptoms are similar, fever, limping, joint pain, lethargy, vomiting, runny stools. When my dog got Anaplasmosis, our then vet at that time, didn't know what it was and sent us home with pain meds. When she kept getting worse, I had a friend who teaches in a Veterinarian University. She got us in to see a specialist and it turned out it was Anaplasmosis which I had never even heard of. We were sent home with a 30 day supply of doxycyline (antibiotic,) some pain meds and something to reduce swelling of joints. She felt much better a few days after starting the meds and eventually made a complete recovery. Since many vets don't see this disease, it is not usually considered in local clinics, they just do the Lyme test and if the dog is negative for Lyme, the vet sends you home with just pain meds. You have to know to ask about Anaplasmosis.

OK, I really thank everyone for there information.

After thinking about it some, I May be just getting impatient. She threw up and went #2 in the pen again today. I had fed her rice with a little wet food on it for taste. But it all came backup.

The throwing up is worrying me more. If she isn't keeping anything down obviously dehydration is next.

It has been only 7 days now so i am going to give it some more time, see if i cant get her to keep something down.

I really thank you for the reply's. Any help is greatly appreciated
