- One shorthaired standard
I adopted a 3 year old male Standard Shorthaired Dachshund last July. After a couple weeks I decided to hire a personal in-home dog trainer for 5 sessions to work with him and his reactiveness (barking & pulling) at people and other dogs while walking. He even did this to people walking dogs over 25 yards away, across the street. Needless to say, it was pretty much a waste of money since it did not correct his reactiveness on walks. I was told from the trainer that it would take time and constant training to desensitize him to people and other dogs. I did learn a few helpful techniques, but nothing that would correct bothersome barking and pulling on the leash when he was near other people and their dogs. My goal wasn't to throw him in a crowded dog park and have him act like an Angel, rather to have him be much calmer on neighborhood walks in the occasional vicinity of other people and dogs. I FOUND THE ANSWER while browsing online for ways to calm /train a reactive dog. It's a hand held device called BarkGuard. It emits an ultrasonic sound (safe & silent to humans) that breaks the dog's current reactiveness and allows him to "re-set" and calm down. No collar is used, no shock is emitted, just a hand held device the size of a TV remote is utilized to stop the reaction. It clearly worked the first time I used it out walking my hound. He stopped barking, looked around a bit confused, then looked at me. I found it's best to consistently say the word "No" or "Stop" each time you have to press the BarkGuard button so your hound will associate the odd sound they hear with the verbal command. Once he calmed and started walking, I would say "Good Boy" praising in a happy voice. I also use a small treat when he calms. After just a couple walks using the device, I rarely had to press the button to get his attention. I could just say "No" and he would stop pulling or getting ready to bark at people and dogs. It really worked well for my hound. The rechargeable BarkGuard device has two buttons: one Low and one High power. I've only had to use the Low power button with great success, and there's a bright LED flashlight built-in one end. Please use this device with humane intent and never press the ultrasonic button longer than 2 or 3 seconds. It's not a punishment, but a distraction training device. It worked wonders for me and my hound, and I hardly have to utilize it on our walks now.
