Hair not growing on neck

Our 6 month old Dachshund Brandy (Today she is 6 months) has very little hair growing on her neck. She has been this way since we got her at 9 weeks old. She is about 3 months old in the picture below. You can kind of see it in the picture what I mean. We do not leave her collar on her all the time. It is only on for a short bit while we take her outside. Thren we remove it. There were a few other of her brothers and sisters in the litter of 11 that have the same thing going on with the hair on their neck. We spoke to the breeder and she says she has never had this with any of her pups in any other of her litters except this one and not all of them have this. What do you guys think? Will it ever grow in as she gets older? She is a beutiful dog with this one exception.

In the early 1970's, we were stationed in Germany and adopted a dachshund puppy. I took her to a German veterinarian, who had been recommended as a dachshund specialist because she had floppy dew claws on her hind feet that needed to be removed as they would catch on the carpets and hurt her. After her operation, the veterinarian pointed to a bare patch on her tail and told me she had "leather tail." He suggested that I give her cod liver oil orally and also to put a small amount on my finger and rub it into the bald place on her tail. Trust me, a dachshund with fish breath and a fishy smelling tail is not pleasant, but I faithfully gave her cod liver oil on a spoon, she would lick it clean, and rub a small amount on her bald patch. By the time she was about 6 months old, the bald patch was covered in hair, and thankfully I could stop with the cod liver oil treatment.

Flash forward to 2009. I took my current dachshund, Libby, to a dachshund festival. Games, races, and prizes and lots of fun until another dachshund, who was off his/her leash ran at Libby and bit her on the top of her head. We cleaned the wound and I applied neosporin until it healed. There was a bald spot about the size of half a dime that just wouldn't grow hair. After a couple of months, I decided that the biting dog must have removed some of the skin that grew hair, but then I thought, it wouldn't hurt to try cod liver oil. After about four months of dosing Libby with a spoon daily, she loved it, and rubbing a dab on top of her head, hairs started to grow in. The up side of this treatment is that it seems to help grow hair, the downside is that your dog is pretty much socially unacceptable as far as odor goes while going through the treatment.

As far as I know this is just a fault in dachshund standard. They sometimes do have little hair on their neck, chest and around ears.Dogs who have this usually just doesn't go to shows.

Brandy is now 7 months old and still has very little hair on her neck. This is very disapointing to me. Beautiful dog except for this.

Update: Brandy will be 10 months old 9/8/14 and she still has little to no hair on her neck. In my opinion it has gotten much worse. We were giving her fish oil pills for humans based on the suggestion of the breeder but it seem to give her diarrhea along with the Blue Buffallo food we were giving her. I would like to try the fish oil again but wonder if I would be wasting my time. I am very dissapointed with this as all the dogs from my breeder are beautiful. One of Brandy's 2 brothers had light hair on his neck but I have not seen a current picture of him. I am wondering if the summer heat has something to do with it getting thinner and maybe her winter coat will be better. Anyone have more experience with this type of thing?

CaseyKC you mentioned cod liver oil. Where would I get this from?

They just are like that.Just a fault, nothing more and nothing to do with their health.I know many dogs with necks and chests like that, they are like that also in winter.

I got mine at Walmart, in the pharmacy department. It is OTC (over the counter) I have also seen it at GNC (health food store) but less $ at Walmart.

Actually, when I was a child,(many, many years ago) my grandmother would dose me and all my cousins with it in the spring. I have no idea what her reasoning was. The only reason we swallowed it was that she immediately produced a candy. Eventually, as we grew older, we disappeared outdoors as soon as she produced the bottle. She would dose the younger cousins and forget about which of us older kids had avoided it. However, based on the enthusiasm of the two dachshunds I have given it to, they love it, but dogs have different opinions than humans on what tastes and smells good. When they burp, it smells like low tide and long dead fish! For me, after all these years, I shudder to even think of tasting it again.
