Calcified Disc

Our five year old dachshund has recently been to the vets to have x rays and he has one, potentially two more calcified discs and is now on bed rest and medication

Still waiting on results if there is an infection but vet is positive.

He has been referred to a specialist spinal hospital in England for the op

It's a very sad time for our household as we can't help but fear the worst

Has anyone else has this problem with their dachshunds and wouldn't mind talking about their experience?

Hi there. I am very sorry that your doxie is going through this right now. What is his/her name?

I've been through this 3 times with 4 dogs. Georgia was the most recent one. She still had bladder and bowel control and we were told that the specialists that did back surgeries would not touch her unless she had lost bladder and bowel too. So we did the strict 8 week crate rest and she had a full recovery. She could not stand on her back legs and had the 'drunken sailor walk'. We used a spare leash or scarf to support the back end when she went to potty. It took at least 5 weeks before we thought maybe she was getting stronger. Maybe. So be very patient, keep upbeat around him/her, and try to not be upset around them.

To help with bowel movements, put a teaspoon or so of canned pumpkin in with the kibble. The fiber of the pumpkin will soften the stool and just make life easier for them. When Georgia was trying to poop she would cry in pain and the pumpkin certainly helped her. Cut back the amount of kibble too so they aren't putting on the pounds while on crate rest.

Please go to this website, it's a website to support people who are dealing with spinal cord injury in their dogs. Dodgerslist: canine back problems home page

Dodgerslist does not recommend chiropractic services on a dog with a spinal cord injury. However they do support acupuncture. When going to the vet, be sure to kennel the dog in the car, strap in the kennel too, to really keep him from moving around, just like at home. Georgia had acupuncture and she really was very comfortable with it.

You can do this. Spinal cords take time to heal so please try to be patient. Good luck!
