Lupi got her RATN title! And Lacy got RATI!

We enjoyed a weekend of Barn Hunt with our Doxies. Our older girl got her Novice title in one weekend, as well as passing both Instinct tests we entered and our younger girl passed her Instinct test! All the Doxies there were enthused about the sport. It's really a lot of fun!

    your best advice

There's so much advice I would give! But I agree with both suggestions: Teach your dog to love a crate, and only train using positive reinforcement methods. No matter how difficult the training can be, whether house training, teaching him to be quiet or not to pull on leash, remember your dog...

    Support needed IVDD surgery

I haven't been in your situation, so don't have much advice that way. I just want to offer some encouragement. When my Doxie went down I found Dodgerslist.com to be a huge help and support. If you haven't already, please check that site out. So many good outcome stories there. Our girl...

    Constant lip licking and yawning?

I'm so happy to hear that! You are awesome for taking the time to teach your dog about the world instead of sheltering her from it. Just keep doing what you're doing and the progress will continue, however gradually.

    Low Riders and Puppy Tales

I chuckled aloud over the cake incident! That must have been such a shock when you saw it, but it seemed to have ended well! You're making me wish I had written down all the funny things my Lupi has done over the years.

    Non destructible Bed

It's totally the stuffing! I swear mine think dog beds are just giant stuffies, waiting to be killed! We probably went through at least 10 beds in the first 6 months after I got my puppy. I hope the Maxx bed works for yours!

    Non destructible Bed

Yup, you can dry it on low heat. The material stays intact. My older girl is almost 8 and she seems quite comfortable on it. I give my girls a few blankets in their kennel to burrow in since they don't destroy those!

    Non destructible Bed

My girls have destroyed countless beds. I finally bought them an indestructible one. It's called a Maxx pet bed. It fits perfectly in the medium-sized crate they share and is machine-washable. They've had it for almost a year and have done no damage to it whatsoever!

Love this one! Great detail without being too wordy.

Lupi got her Rally Novice title!

That's cool you looked it up! I only heard of Rally from Vizzla on this forum actually! Lupi really enjoys it, and it's a nice intro to competitive obedience-not too difficult, but challenging enough to be fun.

Lupi got her Rally Novice title!

This past weekend was the Purina National at Spruce Meadows in Calgary, Alberta. Lupi ended up having 3 out of 3 qualifying runs, and got her title. She also got High in Class for 2 of them! It was our first time competing, so I was really proud of her

    Introducing a new puppy

We brought home a puppy when our older girl was 6. I introduced them outside at first, holding the puppy and letting Lupi sniff her. Most dogs are pretty tolerant of very young puppies, but watch them carefully just in case. Initially, we kept the two dogs separated (the puppy in her x-pen...

    Constant lip licking and yawning?

Yes, you're right. She is showing you she's anxious. Both my Doxies are somewhat anxious, but my younger one is the worst. When we got her at 11 weeks old, she was already growling and barking at children. She would hide under the bed when visitors came and forget walks-she froze and...

    teaching/growling/dramatic

You need to teach her that coming to you when called is extremely rewarding. Use yummy treats to entice her; first show her the treat, then praise and give it to her when she comes to get it. Use the cue word ("come") only when she's already on her way to you, so she understands what the word...

Forget About Being Alpha In Your Pack

I also wanted to clarify: I train for what I want because it is my house and I set the rules. Teaching my dogs what I want from them helps them feel confident and happy. They sit and wait at doors, not because I need to stay ahead of them lest my position as "alpha" be usurped, but...

Forget About Being Alpha In Your Pack

No offense taken:) I was referring to dominance the way that Cesar Milan talks about it. He perpetuates the myth that almost everything our dogs do is somehow an attempt to take over our position in "the pack" and therefore it's necessary to exert our "dominance" over them by making sure we...
